HOLT, Fla., June 1, 2023—A tropical depression has formed in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico on the first day of the 2023 hurricane season.
Labeled TD2, it is expected to be short-lived and remain off shore, according to the National Hurricane Center.
The depression is moving west-northwest at a slow 2 mph. It is expected to turn to the south by Friday.
According to the NHC, modest intensification is forecast and the depression could become Tropical Storm Arlene tonight or tomorrow.
However, the system should begin to weaken by Friday night and degenerate into a remnant low by Saturday.
This is the second tropical system this year. The NHC announced last month that a reassessment of weather systems determined that an area of low pressure that formed off the northeastern coast of the United States in mid-January was an “unnamed” subtropical system.
