HOLT, Fla., June 2, 2023—The first named storm of the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season has formed in the Gulf of Mexico.
Data collected by Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunters indicated Tropical Depression Two has strengthened into Tropical Storm Arlene with maximum sustained winds of nearly 40 mph.
The system is slowly moving south-southwest away from the upper Gulf coast and watches or warnings are not necessary at this time, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Although the storm has strengthened slightly, wind shear and dry air will contribute to the system weakening tonight and degenerating into a remnant low tomorrow, according to the NHC.
