Tropical depression forms over central Atlantic

HOLT, Fla., June 19, 2023—The tropical wave moving westward over the central Atlantic Ocean has now been designated as Tropical Depression Three.

It is moving west near 21 miles per hour and should approach the Lesser Antilles late this week.

Some strengthening is forecast as TD3 moves over warmer-than-normal waters and should become a tropical storm later today or tomorrow.

Before reaching the Lesser  Antilles, the system is forecast to strengthen into Hurricane Arlene, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Behind it, a tropical wave, now identified as Invest 93, is at 50 percent and is also expected to form into a tropical depression in a couple of days as it moves west at 10-20 mph over the eastern and central and tropical Atlantic.
