First hurricane of the season forms

HOLT, Fla., July 22, 2023—The first hurricane of the 2023 season formed in the north Atlantic Ocean today just before reaching cooler waters.

Tropical Storm Don reached low-end hurricane strength this afternoon as it moved over the warm waters of the Gulf Stream.

Hurricane Don is forecast to be short-lived, however. Steady weakening is expected to begin later tonight or early tomorrow, and Don is forecast to become a post-tropical storm tomorrow night.

The system is expected to dissipate in two to three days.

Meanwhile, the wave in the tropical Atlantic is now at 50 percent.

Although environmental conditions are only forecast to be marginally favorable for some gradual development, the system could still become a tropical depression early next week while it moves westward toward the Lesser Antilles.
