CRESTVIEW, Fla., Aug. 30, 2023—A traffic accident in the new exit construction zone closed down the travel lanes in both directions of Interstate 10 yesterday afternoon.

A heavily loaded tractor trailer traveling east through the construction zone lost its load after jackknifing near mile marker 54 around 1 p.m.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol news release, the driver lost control of the truck, veered left and collided with the center guardrail before traveling back across the road and colliding with the right-side guardrail.

Due to the force of the accident, the trailer straps failed and the load fell off the trailer and into both east and west lanes of traffic, according to the release.

A pickup truck from Clarksville, Tenn., another tractor trailer and an SUV from Orlando, all traveling east, collided with the spilled load in the highway.

No one was hurt in the accident.

Westbound traffic was diverted off I-10 at the Crestview exit while the interstate remained closed for nearly four hours. I-10 westbound traffic was backed up about 7 miles to the Mason Cemetery Road overpass at mile marker 63.

The westbound traffic notification sign at mile marker 58 alerts traffic to exit at Crestview.

Both westbound lanes and one eastbound lane of traffic were reopened around 4:45 p.m., according to a notice from the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office.

Eastbound, traffic continued to move slowly through the Crestview area well past 6:30 p.m.
