HOLT, Fla., Sept. 1, 2023—September is starting off with five tropical systems spinning in the Atlantic with a sixth forecast to emerge in a day or so.

Idalia, although now post-tropical, is forecast to strengthen back into a tropical storm, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Located about 155 miles west-southwest of Bermuda, Idalia will be close enough to the island nation that tropical storm warnings have been issued.
After meandering around the Atlantic Ocean for 11 days as a low-pressure system, Tropical Depression Gert has new life.
Gert is near tropical storm strength, according to the NHC.
After that, the system could either go post-tropical or become absorbed into the circulation of Idalia.
Hurricane Franklin is now a category 1 storm, but is expected to begin losing its tropical characteristics and will be classified as a post-tropical system by tonight.
Tropical Storm Jose is charging north-northeast at 25 mph and is expected to dissipate and become absorbed by Hurricane Franklin tonight or early tomorrow.
The newest system to join the others in the Atlantic Ocean is Tropical Depression 12, which was identified in the latest NHC tropics update.
Some strengthening is expected and the system is expected to become Tropical Storm Katia later today or tomorrow.
By day three, the system is forecast to degenerate into a remnant low.
Finally, a new tropical wave is expected to emerge off the west coast of Africa in a day or two, according to the NHC.
Some development is expected during the early and middle parts of next week and a tropical depression could form as it moves westward across the tropical Atlantic.
Formation chances are medium at 50 percent.
