HOLT, Fla., Sept. 17, 2023—The Atlantic Ocean remains active with three tropical storms as the season pushes through the peak month of September.
In addition to tropical storms Lee, Margot and Nigel, a new tropical wave is about to join the pack.
An African wave is forecast to move off the west coast midweek and move into favorable conditions as it travels west across the eastern tropical Atlantic.
Chances for formation are already at 30 percent.
Meanwhile, Post Tropical Storm Lee is nearing Prince Edward Island located off the coast of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia in Canada.
The National Hurricane Center notes that Lee could dissipate by Tuesday.

Tropical Storm Nigel, on the other hand, located in the central Atlantic, is strengthening and is forecast to become a hurricane sometime tomorrow.
The NHC is forecasting Nigel to peak as a category 3 hurricane sometime Tuesday or so.
Nigel is forecast to remain at sea.
Tropical Storm Margo, however, is not expected to last much longer and could lose storm strength later today, according to the NHC.
So far this season, there have been nine tropical storms and 3 hurricanes with two of them strengthening into major hurricanes, Idalia and Lee. Nigel could become the third major hurricane of the season.

As the season transitions into the fall months and the Atlantic Ocean begins to cool, storm formation chances will shift to the warmer Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea.
For tropical systems to form, they need low wind shear, moisture and warm waters. Gulf and Caribbean water temperatures remain warm, in the mid-to-high 80s.
The season ends Nov. 30.
