‘Fill ‘er up, please’
Remember (or ever heard of) full-service gas stations? In New Jersey, that’s all they have. New Jersey is the only state in the U.S. that does not allow customers to pump their own gas, as in, it’s illegal to pump your own gas. In fact, station owners can be fined as much as $250 for a first offense if customers touch a gas pump, and $500 for each offense after that. Oregon was also a full-service state until the first week of August when it changed its law to allow self-service stations.

Bird hotels
A Danish wind farm company has built three giant bird houses offshore of Britain’s eastern coast. Each house can accommodate about 500 individual nests for kittiwake, a seabird species that could be impacted by the company’s nearby wind farm. Inside the center of the house area are chairs, tables, whiteboards and sliding viewing panels for researchers to study the nesting birds.

Beekeepers swarm to the rescue
Overturned bee hives from a traffic accident in Ontario, Canada, in August left millions of angry bees swarming the roadway. Local suited beekeepers swarmed to the rescue while first responders remained in their vehicles. A passenger returning to Minnesota from Kenya tried to clear customs after declaring giraffe poop. The traveler planned to make jewelry with the excrement; however, the poop was seized and destroyed, per protocol, according to custom officials.
