Disaster preparedness sales tax holiday begins today

HOLT, Fla., June 1, 2024—The first of two disaster preparedness sales tax holidays begins today on qualifying items.

The holiday ends June 14.

Tax exempt items include portable generators, tarps, gas cans, portable and weather radios, batteries and flashlights, to name a few items.

Disaster preparedness supplies such as pet supplies, tarps, batteries, generators and flashlights, are all included in the list of items eligible to be purchased tax-free to help stock disaster supply kits.

A complete list of items is provided in Tax Information Publication No. 24A01-04.

According to a Florida Revenue fact sheet, there is no limit on the number of qualifying items that can be purchased tax exempt and the exemption applies to online orders as well.

The sales tax holiday does not include items bought at theme parks, public lodging or airports.

“I urge all residents to prioritize preparedness during these tax-free holidays and make any necessary updates to their disaster supply kit and plans,” said Florida Division Emergency Management executive director Kevin Guthrie.

A second two-week sales tax holiday will take place Aug. 24 through Sept. 6.
