High-speed chase ends in Alabama

SANTA ROSA COUNTY, Fla., June 12, 2024—A high-speed chase that began in Santa Rosa County ended in Baldwin County, Ala., yesterday.

Arrested was Romero Antwan Nail, 18, from Gretna, La., on charges of fleeing, with more charges to follow after completion of the investigation.

Around 2:30 p.m. yesterday, a Florida State Police trooper saw a black Ford Mustang traveling recklessly at a speed of 130 miles per hour on Interstate 10 headed west near mile marker 35, according to an FHP news release.

Knowing he couldn’t overtake the driver, the trooper reported the car’s description and driver’s violations.

Near mile marker 22, another trooper saw the car and attempted to initiate a traffic stop.

At this point, Nail began to flee, accelerating from near 130 mph to 150-plus mph, passing vehicles on the north and south shoulders of the interstate, according to the release.

He exited the highway at mile marker 17 onto Scenic Highway in Pensacola, at which point, FHP lost sight of him and began searching the area for the Mustang.

With the help of another driver, a trooper located the car parked in a driveway just off Scenic Court. As troopers approached, Nail aggressively accelerated away through a couple of yards and down an embankment back onto Scenic Highway headed south, according to the release.

Troopers chased Nail for a short time before breaking off the chase.

Although they weren’t able to actively pursue the fleeing Mustang, FHP tracked the vehicle as it traveled out of state.

The Mustang was located at a gas station in Baldwin County where a local deputy conducted a traffic stop and detained Nail until he was arrested by the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office on an FHP warrant.
