Possible Gulf Coast landfall includes northwest Florida

HOLT, Fla., Aug. 1, 2024—The National Hurricane Center has adjusted the cone of development for Invest 97 to the west with its 7 p.m. outlook update.

Invest 97 is still a tropical wave and is expected to move west-northwest near or over Cuba tomorrow before emerging over the Straits of Florida Friday night or Saturday.

Conditions are expected to be favorable for development at that time and a tropical depression is likely to form this weekend over the Straits or near the Florida peninsula.

A NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft is scheduled to investigate the system tomorrow, if necessary.

Formation chance is now high at 70 percent.

Most of Florida is now under a state of emergency as of this afternoon.
