Gulf system shows some strengthening potential

HOLT, Fla., Sept. 8, 2024—The tropical wave that made its way across the Caribbean Sea and Yucatan Peninsula now shows potential to become a storm.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Potential Tropical Cyclone Six is expected to become a tropical storm tomorrow with significant intensification Tuesday and is forecast to become a hurricane by the middle of the week before it reaches the northwestern Gulf coast.

Because PTC6 does not yet have a well-defined center, the track is hard to pin down, according to the NHC. Once the center is more defined, the NHC is forecasting the system to turn northward and then north-northeastward.

The next name on the list is Francine.

Two other systems in the central tropical Atlantic Ocean are showing potential for development.

Invest 92, an area of low pressure, could become a tropical depression during the next couple of days.

A third area of low pressure behind Invest 92 is expected to move little during the next couple of days until it interacts with a tropical wave that is forecast to move off the coast of Africa tomorrow.

Invest 92’s chances of development is high at 70 percent.

Gradual development is expected and a tropical depression could form during the middle or latter part of the week. For now, it has a medium 50 percent chance of development.
