EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla., Oct. 21, 2024— Divers will dispose of six unexploded bombs this week in the Choctawhatchee Bay.
Members of the Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit Six from Panama City will explode the ammunition Thursday and Friday between 7 a.m. and noon each day.
During this time, no person or vessel may enter, transit or remain in the area within a 1,500-foot radius of the explosion site, unless authorized. A no-swimmer or diver zone will also be enforced with a 5,000-foot radius of the site.
Each zone will remain in effect until the operations are completed.
The plan is to dispose of the 80-year-old unexploded ordnance in their current location with controlled detonations.
The six 500-pound World War II-era bombs were discovered in Choctawhatchee Bay during ongoing routine investigations of the Bay Legacy Range.
People, vessels and water-based activities are required to remain clear of the safety zone during these times for their safety. Please see the marine safety information bulletin for more information.
U.S. Coast Guard Destin and the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office will have people in the area to prevent entry into the safety zone.
