FHP: Slow down during next week’s winter weather

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Jan. 18, 2025—Next week’s potential for winter weather means roads could be slicker than what drivers in this area are used to.

The Florida Highway Patrol will be closely monitoring Interstate 10 from Escambia to Madison counties and encourages everyone to avoid being on the highway during unsafe conditions if possible, said Capt. Jason King, Troup H, Quincy District Commander.

“We understand some travel cannot be prevented, so we encourage the motoring public to plan ahead and give yourself extra time to travel,” he said.

King suggests drivers move at a slower speed and create more distance from cars in front and around them.

Black ice, a glaze of transparent ice that forms when precipitation freezes on pavement, is possible, especially on bridges and overpasses during this potential winter event. Black ice may look wet or even be undetectable when driving.

Black ice forms first on bridges and overpasses because air can circulate under and below the roadway surface causing pavement temperature on the bridge to fall rapidly.

“Bridges may freeze over before asphalt so the transition from asphalt to a concrete bridge could create a loss-of-control situation,” he said.

Also be sure to defrost windshields and make sure wipers are clear of ice, he said.

“Your safety is of the utmost importance to us,” said King. “Please do your part to be prepared for this weather event. Drive defensively and arrive alive.”
