Tropical depression forms over Atlantic

HOLT, Fla., Sept. 17, 2025— Satellite data indicated Invest 92 developed into Tropical Depression Seven over the Atlantic Ocean early this morning.

Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph with higher gusts.

The system is moving west at 13 mph, located roughly midway between the Cabo Verde Islands and the Windward Islands.

A west-northwestward to northwestward motion across the tropical and subtropical central Atlantic is expected during the next few days, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Slow strengthening is forecast, and the system could become Tropical Storm Gabrielle later today or tonight.

Only modest strengthening is expected over the next day or two as TD7 continues to battle moderate wind shear and intrusions of dry air.

However, more notable strengthening seems likely by the weekend when the system moves into more conducive environmental conditions, according to the NHC.

The NHC intensity forecast shows the system reaching hurricane strength by the weekend.

A turn to the northwest is expected and the forecast is for TD7 to follow a similar track as Hurricane Erin and Tropical Storm Fernand earlier this season, keeping the system in the Atlantic.

Meanwhile, a second tropical wave located just east and southeast of the Cabo Verde Islands is in a marginally favorable environment, moving west at 15-20 mph.

The NHC gives it a 20 percent chance of development through the next seven days.
