PUNXSUTAWNEY, Penn., Feb. 2, 2026— It may not be what northwest Floridians want to hear right now, but Punxsutawney Phil predicted six more weeks of winter.
Today, the groundhog prognosticator saw his shadow at the annual Groundhog Day celebration at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Penn.
Popular tradition has it that when the groundhog sees his shadow, he returns to his den to wait winter out. If it’s a cloudy day and he sees no shadow, he stays above ground to welcome the coming spring.
Today, Punxsutawney Phil, the official rodent weather forecaster of Groundhog Day, “saw his shadow at 7:25 a.m. in -3 degree temperature under a crisp and clear sky,” according to the official recording on the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club website.
Guest of honor for this year’s forecast was U.S. Sen. Dave McCormick (Rep.), the first sitting senator to attend the annual forecasting event at Gobbler’s Knob.
Phil’s prognostications go back to 1887 when he first predicted more winter. Last year he also predicted six more weeks of cold.
Although it’s a big to-do on Feb. 2, Punxsutawney Phil has only been right 35-40 percent of the time which is less accurate than a coin flip. His winter predictions far outnumber his spring predictions more than 5 to 1. His predictions seem to more aptly describe the current weather conditions at Gobbler’s Knob than the arrival of an early spring.
