Door-to-door Social Security scammer

CRESTVIEW, Fla., March 6, 2026—A senior Crestview resident reported a suspicious incident to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office that occurred on East Chestnut Street.

An elderly resident reported that a woman came to their home claiming she was there to help them sign up for Social Security benefits.

The woman already had the resident’s personal identifiable information but did not identify herself as working for any legitimate company or agency.

When questioned further, the woman claimed she obtained the information from the federal government, then later denied being affiliated with the government.

She could not provide a business card and placed the resident on the phone with a supposed supervisor who transferred the call to an automated system.

As a reminder, the federal government does not send representatives to homes to sign up people for Social Security, according to the OCSO.

Should someone come knocking, do not give out personal information.
