Karen Kroll, 62, was charged with 22 counts of aggravated animal cruelty and 42 counts of animal cruelty.

The investigation began after an Emerald Coast Crime Stoppers tip about conditions at “Aussie and Me Animal Rescue.”

When deputies were able to access the property, they found approximately 70 dogs, two donkeys and a pig, many without adequate food or water and showing clear signs of neglect, according to an OCSO release.

With the help of the Panhandle Animal Welfare Society, a search warrant was executed March 25 and more than 70 animals were ultimately removed from the property.

Veterinary evaluations revealed conditions included:

  • Animals infested with parasites, some having ingested foreign objects like leashes and collars
  • Dogs suffering from heartworm disease
  • Severe malnourishment and dehydration
  • Untreated injuries, infections and chronic medical conditions
  • A donkey with painful hoof infections caused by prolonged exposure to unsanitary conditions

A veterinarian determined the animals had endured severe and prolonged neglect, resulting in significant and unnecessary suffering, according to the release.

All animals are now receiving care and treatment.
