Dollar General coming to Holt

HOLT, Oct. 11, 2016—Construction is underway at the southeast corner of Log Lake Road and Highway 90 in Holt as a new Dollar General store takes shape.

If all goes as scheduled, construction completion will be mid-winter 2017 with a grand opening early next spring, according to Crystal Ghassemi, Dollar General Corporate Communications.

When choosing store sites, Dollar General “looks for places where we can offer customers an easy and convenient shopping choice,” she said in response to an email query. “We know convenience is a major factor in our customers’ shopping decisions as we generally serve customers within a three-to-five mile radius, or a 10-minute drive.”

A store in Holt means increased access to food, household goods and basic clothing items without having to drive long distances.

“In my discussions with the citizens who live in the Holt area, one of the most requested improvements has been greater access to groceries and other goods in the community,” said Nathan Boyles, District 3 Okaloosa county commissioner, in an email. “The construction of a Dollar General in Holt will greatly increase the community’s access to general necessities helping to improve the overall quality of life within the community.”

In July, the Oklaoosa County Board of Commissioners voted to modify a 2009 resolution that prevented permanent structures to be built above a vacated utility easement or alleyway that bisected the 1-plus-acre where the store is to be located. Modifying the resolution opened the way for construction of the new store. Sale of the property closed in early July, according to documents from the July 6 county commission meeting.

Holt’s store would have an operating space of 7,300 feet, according to the corporate website.

“The store will employ approximately 6-10 employees, depending on the individual needs of the store,” said Ghassemi. Job opportunities should be available within the next three-to-four weeks.

To apply for a job, Dollar General requires all new applications to be submitted through its website at

Dollar General, operating for more than 75 years, is among the largest discount retailers in the United States, operating in 43 states. The company opened its 13,000th store Aug. 13 in Birmingham, Ala.
