Shoppers wait in line early Saturday morning during Dollar General’s grand opening. The first 50 people through the doors received a $10 gift card.

HOLT, Fla., Feb. 4, 2017–Holt’s new Dollar General store had its grand opening today.

The store opened its doors at 8 a.m. to a line of people waiting to be one of the first 50 through the doors so they could get a $10 gift card.

Another 200 received a small black and yellow DG tote bag and a large yellow plastic tumbler.

Checkout lines stretched down the aisle as people waited to spend their $10 card or take advantage of coupons mailed out earlier in the week with the grand opening announcement.

“We had 72 people the first hour,” said Bill Goetz, store manager. “It was a good turnout.”

The store features a new layout that debuted in early 2016  with a focus on perishable and health and beauty items and faster checkout.

The store here is larger than the one in Baker by 2,100 square feet, according to Geotz. The extra floorspace allows for more food products.

“For example, we have frozen vegetables and more variety of pizza, rather than just pepperoni,” he said.

Once the liquor license is approved, the Holt store also will carry beer and wine.

Another service not available in the Baker store–or anywhere in Holt–is carpet cleaning.

“We rent Rug Doctor here,” the manager said.

Goetz wants customers to enjoy shopping at the Holt Dollar General and is focused on being customer friendly.

That means keeping aisles uncluttered to allow easier access and better flow through the store.

“I try to push service,” Goetz said. “I listen to what people are saying in line.”

Although the grand opening was today, the store had a “soft opening” the evening of Jan. 15. The first full day of business was Jan. 16 and customer support surpassed expectations.

“We doubled what we anticipated,” Goetz said.
