Virus numbers rise in north county

HOLT, Fla., Sept. 25, 2020—Today’s state health department update showed a rise in new virus cases.

Holt, Baker, Laurel Hill and Crestview all showed an increase in cases in today’s update.

Milligan, which carried three virus cases for six days this month, mysteriously dropped back down to two with no explanation provided by the state.

Holt now has 36 cases, an increase of two from yesterday. Baker added one for a total of 94. Laurel Hill also added one and now has 48 total cases. Crestview added nine more cases bringing its total to 992.

In the southern part of the county, Fort Walton Beach topped 1,600 total cases with today’s update.

Overall, Okaloosa County added 48 more cases to its total of 4,884 as it slowly inches toward reaching a milestone of 5,000 COVID-19 cases.

By comparison, Santa Rosa has 5,279 cases, Walton has 1,937 and Escambia has 12,181 total cases and more than twice as many virus-related deaths than Okaloosa County.

While no new deaths were added to Okaloosa County’s total in today’s update, Florida surpassed the 14,000 virus-related death mark.

Today, Gov. Ron DeSantis initiated his phase 3 reopening plan. Under phase 3, restaurants, bars and nightclubs may operate at full capacity.

Fines and penalties for violating restrictions in the previous phases have been suspended.
