Atlantic begins to wake up

HOLT, Fla., June 1, 2022—The Atlantic Ocean is starting the 2022 hurricane season with two areas to watch for further development.

Invest 91, located near the Yucatan Peninsula and southeastern Gulf of Mexico has a high chance of further development and is now at 80 percent.

A favorable environment means this low pressure system could develop into Tropical Depression 1 as it moves northeast over the northwestern Caribbean Sea and southeastern Gulf during the next couple of days reaching the Florida Keys and south Florida Friday or Saturday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Should it strengthen into a tropical storm, it will be named Alex.

Another area of interest is located in the southwestern Atlantic northeast of Bermuda.

Significant development of this system appears unlikely as it moves generally east-northeast away from the United States, according to the NHC.

Formation chance is 10 percent during the next five days.
