SHALIMAR, Fla., Aug. 23, 2018–One of five individuals charged with the break-in and robbery of a home with the residents inside in September 2017 was sentenced.
Crestview resident Joey Kyle Smelley, 26, was sentenced to 20 years in the state prison on the charges of burglary of a dwelling with assault, grand theft over $20,000, grand theft auto and grand theft of a firearm.
The prison sentence is to be followed by 30 years of probation.
Charges arose from an incident Sept. 10, 2017, when victims living in Baker were awakened by two masked individuals demanding money and firearms.
The defendants took cash, jewelry and handguns as well as the victim’s 2005 black Lincoln Town Car.
Smelly was arrested at the Okaloosa County Jail Jan. 16 where he was being held for driving without a license, having plates on his vehicle that weren’t registered to the car and failure to register the auto.
The case was investigated by the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office.
