HOLT, Fla., Oct. 20, 2018—There’s still time to donate to the food drive to support the Holt Community Food Pantry.
The food drive is a joint project between the Rotary Club of Crestview and Tiffany Woodson State Farm to provide 150 Thanksgiving meal boxes to those in need.
Items can be dropped off at the State Farm office located at 938 N. Ferdon Blvd. in Crestview until Nov. 12.
Hurricane Michael’s destruction in Bay County has rightly shifted focus on easing the pain of those left with literally nothing; however, Holt’s pantry operation continues to support people who need help locally.
“With the hurricane relief going on, we’re struggling to collect what we need,” said Samma Brannon, Crestview Rotary member.
Additionally, Brannon just found out her turkey donor was no longer available.
“The donor for the turkeys has scaled back their donation to us because of hurricane response, so now I’m scrambling looking for turkeys,” she said.
The food bank the Holt pantry relies on to fill its shelves with dried and canned goods is also focusing exclusively on hurricane relief for the rest October.
“The Bay Area Food Bank told us we can’t pick up food for the rest of October,” Ash said. “That puts us in a bind as we go into the holiday season.”
The pantry is still receiving a Destin Harvest truck delivery every two weeks as scheduled, but that rarely includes dried and canned goods such as rice, pasta, vegetables, soups, peanut butter, jelly and spaghetti sauce, weekly staples of pantry operations.
“With the holidays coming up, we really need to restock our shelves,” Ash said.
Regardless of the setbacks, Thanksgiving boxes are still scheduled for distribution as planned.
“The boxes will be distributed the first and second Wednesday of November,” said Ash. “The pantry will be closed the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.”
Items needed for the Thanksgiving boxes include:
- Boxed instant potatoes
- Canned gravy
- Stuffing mix
- Canned green beans
- Cream of mushroom soup
- Fried onions
- Canned pumpkin pie filling
- Canned cranberry sauce
- Graham cracker pie crust
