CRESTVIEW, Fla., April 22, 2019–A Crestview teen is charged with a felony after taking part in a hoax phone call about shooting his mother and threatening to shoot himself April 21.
The 13-year-old boy was charged with making a false report concerning the use of a firearm in a violent felony.
The call came in to the Crestview Police Department’s non-emergency line around 10:30 a.m. Sunday morning.
Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office units responded and set up a perimeter around the residence on Sharon Avenue.
The OCSO Special Response Team was called to the scene after deputies were unable to establish contact or see inside the home.
After making a forced entry, they found no one there.
An investigation determined everyone related to the teen was alive and well.
Contact was ultimately made with the 13-year old. He admitted to taking part in making the call which resulted in a waste of law enforcement time and resources.
The teen was participating in a group chat on Instagram when a member of the chat said he was going to “swat” the teen. During the online chat, the Crestview teen dared the chatter who then made the phone call that sent the OCSO to his grandparents’ address.
Known as “swatting,” this type of hoax often leads to the involvement of a SWAT or Special Response Team.
Investigation is ongoing.
