HOLT, Fla., Aug. 27, 2019—The National Hurricane Center is now forecasting Tropical Storm Dorian to reach hurricane strength before the weekend.
The latest forecast track shows Dorian becoming a category 1 hurricane sometime Thursday evening into Friday.
According to the NHC, slow strengthening is forecast during the next 24 hours with the storm reaching hurricane strength when it approaches Puerto Rico Wednesday.
Some weakening is expected after Dorian moves across the higher terrain of Puerto Rico, but the storm is expected to gradually re-strengthen when passing the Turks, Caicos and Bahamas.
Currently, Dorian is moving northwest at 13 mph with 50 mph sustained winds. The NHC shifted the forecast track to the north with the 11 p.m. update.
