HOLT, Fla., Aug. 28, 2019—The National Hurricane Center’s 11 a.m. EDT storm update forecasts Tropical Storm Dorian to become a hurricane later today.
It is expected to continue strengthening during the next few days while moving over warm Atlantic waters.
New predictions are for 115 mph winds making Dorian a major hurricane as a category 3 storm by the weekend.
The entire Florida peninsula is in the five-day forecast cone.
Tropical Storm Dorian is centered about 25 miles southeast of St. Croix in the Virgin Islands.
It’s moving toward the northwest near 13 mph with maximum sustained wind speeds near 70 mph, just shy of a category 1 hurricane.
While the next complete storm update is scheduled for 5 p.m. EDT, the NHC will issue an advisory when Dorian reaches hurricane strength.
