HOLT, Fla., Nov. 22, 2019–A deadly traffic accident closed the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 today.
The single-car accident happened at mile marker 43 east of the Garner Landing Road overpass around 6 a.m.
According to a news release from the Florida Highway Patrol, two people were killed and three were injured in the accident.
Killed was driver Carlos Alvarez-Manco, 19, of Katy, Texas. An unidentified female 24-year-old passenger from Colombia was also killed; next-of-kin notification is pending.
Injured were Cristian Suarez, 22, also from Katy; Nora Castrillion, 52, and Cristian Castrillion-Zapata, 30, both from Columbia.
According to the FHP release, the 2015 Kia Forte was traveling east on I-10 near mile-marker 43 when the car left the roadway, hit the ditch along the side of the interstate, then hit a tree in the wood line.
Alvarez-Manco and a passenger were pronounced dead by Okaloosa County EMT responders upon their arrival at the scene.
The other three passengers were transported to the Fort Walton Beach Medical Center for treatment. The extent of their injuries are not known at this time.
The news release indicates seatbelts were not being used at the time of the accident and alcohol was not a factor.
Holt Fire District responded to the accident along with Crestview Fire Department, North Okaloosa Fire Department, Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, Okaloosa EMT and the Florida Highway Patrol.
