HOLT, Fla., Aug. 10, 2021—The National Hurricane Center expects Potential Tropical Cyclone Six to strengthen into Tropical Storm Fred today.
Gradual strengthening is forecast during the next day or so and PTC6 is expected to become a tropical storm later this morning as it moves over the northeastern Caribbean Sea today.
Moving west-northwest at 17 mph, the system is expected to pass near or over the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico late today and tonight and be near or over Hispaniola tomorrow.
Some weakening is likely while the system interacts with the mountains on Hispaniola tomorrow, according to the NHC.
A NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft is en route to investigate the system to determine if it has become a tropical storm.
According to the NHC, it is too soon to determine what, if any, impacts could occur in Florida by late this week or this weekend due to the uncertainty in the long-range forecast.
