Fatal crash on I-10 closes interstate

BONIFAY, Fla., May 20, 2022—A wrong-way driver on Interstate 10 died after meeting a tractor trailer yesterday evening.

The driver of a 2003 Mitsubishi Galant was traveling eastbound in the inside westbound lane of I-10 when she met the Freightliner also traveling in the inside lane headed west near mile marker 110 around 7:40 p.m.

According to a news release by Florida Highway Patrol, it appeared the semi attempted to avoid the Mitsubishi by swerving to the right. However, the two vehicles impacted on the front driver’s side.

The car was pushed into the center of the grass median tree line where the 68-year-old Fort Walton Beach woman was ejected from her vehicle. She died at the scene.

The semi came to a stop in the north emergency lane shoulder where it burst into flames.

The 63-year-old Mississippi driver escaped unharmed.

The interstate was closed for more than seven hours and traffic was diverted at exit 112 in Bonifay due to scene investigation and cleanup of the accident.
