Florida driver’s license number changes

OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla., April 26, 2026—Those people who have renewed or replaced their driver’s license since July 31, 2024, need to update their voter information.

Florida updated how driver’s licenses and state identifications are issued in 2022. Beginning July 31, 2024, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles began implementing the new law.

The law now requires license or ID card numbers to have at least four or more randomly generated numbers. This change is designed to enhance identity security.

Customers renewing or replacing their licenses or identification cards in person or online will be issued a new number. Once the new number has been issued, it will only change again if the customer’s last name changes.

When applying for a renewed or replaced license, those people who did not answer “yes” to have their voter registration information electronically updated with the new number will need to update that information with the Florida election office.

Okaloosa County residents can update their voter information by:

  • going online at the Florida Online Voter Registration website
  • calling the Okaloosa County Elections office at 850-689-5600
  • visiting the Okaloosa County Elections office at the Brackin Building, 302 N. Wilson St., Crestview

Registration for the 2026 Primary Election closes July 20 for the Aug. 18 election. Early voting begins Aug. 8. The general election is Nov. 3.
