Depression close to tropical storm strength

HOLT, Fla., Sept. 18, 2020—Tropical Depression 22 is nearing tropical storm strength according to the latest update by the National Hurricane Center.

Tropical Storm Wilfred is expected to appear sometime today and strengthen into Hurricane Wilfred by Sunday.

Peak sustained winds are forecast to reach 75 mph.

The system has been meandering in the Gulf since Sept. 10 when it first showed up on an 8 a.m. NHC update.

Since then, it generally moved southwest toward Mexico.

Its current track is taking it north-northeast, then is forecast to turn west-northwest toward the Texas coast where it is expected to slowly travel near the coast toward Louisiana.

Because of uncertainty in the long-range forecast, it’s too early to determine what areas could see direct wind and storm surge impacts from this system, according to the NHC.
