HOLT, Fla., Sept. 2, 2022—It’s tool time: a sales tax holiday for tool purchases begins tomorrow and runs through Sept. 9.
This tax holiday begins as Labor Day sales are in full swing.
The tool tax holiday means “tax is not due on the retail sales of eligible items related to tools commonly used by skilled trade workers,” according to information released by the state.
The sales tax holiday does not apply to rentals of any eligible items. It also doesn’t apply to sales within a theme park, entertainment complex, public lodging complex or airport, which for the most part, doesn’t affect this area.
Eligible items include work gloves, hand tools, duffle and tote bags, safety glasses, toolboxes, tool belts, shop lights and more. All have a maximum amount allowed, as listed below.
There is no limit on the number of qualifying items that can be purchased tax-exempt, according to the law signed May 6.
In addition, qualifying items purchased online or by catalog are also exempt if the order is completed during the sales tax exemption period, even if delivery is after the holiday.
Items not on the list are not eligible during the tax holiday.
Additionally, items normally packaged together cannot be sold separately to qualify for the sales tax exemption. When tax-exempt items are normally sold together with taxable merchandise as a set or single unit, the sales price of the set or unit is subject to sales tax.
Coupons that reduce the price of an item to meet the price threshold are eligible for the tax exemption, according to a tax information publication regarding the sales tax holiday. Other questions and answers are available on the Florida Department of Revenue website.
